Eriba Touring: as legendary and indestructible as the VW Beetle
Bad Waldsee, 16th april 2004
Hymer AG ranks among the most innovative and most successful leisure vehicle manufacturers in Europe, looking back on a long history steeped in tradition. At the headquarters in Bad Waldsee, Upper Swabia, some 1,055 employees produce just under 5,000 motorhomes and over 1,700 caravans per annum. At the french subsidiary company, Hymer France S.A.S., over 200 employees are responsible for a further 1,400 motorhomes and 2,000 brand new caravans every year.
Erwin Hymer started producing caravans in Bad Waldsee as long ago as 1956. The forerunner of the Touring series was the Ur-Troll. Meanwhile the “Touring” has advanced to cult status among caravans. What the VW Beetle is to the automobile industry, the Eriba Touring is to the caravan branch: one of the best-known and most successful caravans roaming European roads. Almost 70,000 Touring owners testify to the incredible success of this caravan series from the house of Hymer.
The main clientele for the Eriba Touring series is couples of higher education who are fond of travelling. Meanwhile more and more younger families, mostly with a small child, are expanding this target group. Especially when owning a compact towing vehicle, they value the perennial arguments speaking in favour of this classic caravan series: convenient dimensions, low weight and first-class road-holding characteristics.
The AERO system, proven for almost 50 years, featuring the legendary steel tube frame ensures durable robustness of the Eriba Touring models. This light-weight, self-supporting and corrosion-proof structure is encased with a stove-enamelled aluminium outer skin and a rising roof made of GRP (glass fibre reinforced plastic).
Featuring a low overall height of 1.98 to 2.20 metres, all the Touring models are suitable for most garages.
Hymer offers sixteen different Touring models. While there is one “original” standard model (Puck 120), all the other models are offered with upmarket GT appointments. These encompass an outer skin of smooth metal, stone-protection plate at the front, modern external design, aluminium wheel rims and comfortable interior furnishing of “Tessin pear wood” design.
The special “Touring Fifty’s” models flaunt the stylistic elements typical of the fifties. Identifying features are their continuous silver-coloured window section and outer casing in robust stucco-style sheet metal. Despite their nostalgic appearance, the “Touring Fifty’s” are of course equipped with all mod cons such as hobs in Ceran look, round stainless steel sink, heating and refrigerator.
Against the background of successful expertise of almost fifty years’ standing in the design and production of leisure vehicles, the brand name of Hymer is meanwhile a synonym for an entire class of products. Hymer embodies "German standard" status and is considered as a generic term for the motorhome – along the lines of “Persil” for washing powder or “Lego” for building blocks.
