Exclusively from Hymer: integrated motorhomes with Ford chassis and air bags
Bad Waldsee, 21 March 2007
Hymer belongs to the manufacturers in the leisure vehicle industry who do not merely preach safety: the company is second to none in performing crash tests on motorhomes. Staging deliberate accidents is necessary to establish findings for vehicle design affording the greatest possible safety for the occupants.
The latest example: Hymer had a crash test on a brand new Hymer EXSIS-i carried out at the Federal Highway Research Institute (Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen -BASt) in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. The results exceeded all the experts’ expectations. Eberhard Färber, a principal officer at the BASt and responsible for passive safety, attested that the current performance of the Hymer motorhome showed distinct advancement over earlier motorhome crash tests. The key finding: the Hymer EXSIS-i is one of the safest motorhomes on the market. The dummies were hardly damaged, meaning that occupants are exposed to an extremely small risk of injury!
The Hymer EXSIS-i with Ford Transit chassis, specially loaded (equivalent to the maximum number of persons plus load, including optional extras) and weighing almost 3 tons, slammed into a concrete block without braking while travelling at just under 33 km/h. The deformation performance of the nose upon impact was excellent and it was only 55 centimetres shorter after the crash. The driver’s cabin of the EXSIS-i remained fully intact. The A-pillar hardly moved. What is more, there was no displacement worth mentioning of either the steering wheel or pedals. A further remarkable point is that, while being cracked, the windscreen - which normally does not survive such tests – still stayed firmly bonded in the frame after the crash.
Klaus Voggel, the Hymer engineer responsible for crash tests, was delighted: “Crash box, belt tensioner, belt-tension limiter and air bags all worked together perfectly. The solidity of the interior finishing prevented any significant damage. The occupants would have got away with bruising and grazing, at the very worst with broken ribs.”
The interior, furniture and walls showed no signs of any basic damage. Slight deformation to a cupboard wall and a sliding door in the washroom area will be prevented by reinforced supports in future. Plus: now that the test results have been evaluated it proves to be almost inconceivable that the camping body of Hymer motorhomes could become detached from the chassis during an accident.
Following successful conclusion of the test, Hymer is the only manufacturer Europe-wide to offer integrated motorhomes with Ford chassis, incorporating driver and passenger air bags as standard.
The test also showed that with their patented PUAL body construction, special bonding technology and high-quality interior finishing, Hymer’s integrated motorhomes have reached the safety level of vans. The outcome of the EXSIS-i crash test will of course have positive repercussions for all the other integrated Hymer model ranges, meaning that all integrated Hymer motorhomes will be technically recognised industry-wide as living up to the highest safety standards.
