For the past five years, Elisa and Ron have been traveling to Norway in winter. The better they get to know the country, the more they discover: remote scenic routes, quiet valleys, secluded fjords, and places that exude a special tranquility in winter. This year, their dog Fino is joining them for the first time – and the two are once again testing two winter-ready models: the comfort-oriented Hymer B-MC T and the compact, agile Hymer ML-T Xperience.

Start in Bad Waldsee & crossing to Norway

The journey begins as always in Bad Waldsee. After a thorough briefing, they pack everything they need for winter camping: warm clothing, snow chains, spikes, a shovel, and a fire pit. Even on their first night in Denmark, they are treated to a delicate display of the Northern Lights – a first indication that nature is once again smiling upon them.

Hiking in the rain & mighty waterfalls

The first two weeks are wet – very wet. But Elisa and Ron aren't deterred: They climb Preikestolen, hike to Trollpikken, and enjoy the majestic waterfalls, which appear particularly powerful due to the heavy rain.

At the same time, they are monitoring road conditions. Milder temperatures mean that many high mountain routes are still open. When they see on vegvesen.no that both the Gaularfjelletsvegen and the Trollstigen are passable, they immediately seize the opportunity.

Gaularfjellsvegen – a dream in white

The Gaularfjelletsvegen exceeds expectations: deserted roads, clear views in the rain and alpine vistas. The Hymer ML‑T Xperience proves particularly useful here – its rear-wheel drive ensures safe handling on wet and later snowy roads.

The Hymer B‑MC T scores points for comfort: the good insulation keeps the interior warm while rain and snow pass by outside.

Another detail that quickly becomes important in everyday life is the new onboard shower. Clean lines, a surprisingly spacious interior for a motorhome, and pleasant materials create a modern, airy feel.

Trollstigen & Atlantic Road – two highlights in a row

The next day brings the big double feature: Trollstigen and the Atlantic Road.

Trollstigen – for many the most spectacular road in Norway – reveals itself dramatically: fog alternates with brief moments of sunshine, waterfalls cascade beside the road, and the switchbacks are almost empty. Ron would love to drive the route several times, but daylight is scarce.

The Atlantic Road gives them that typical "James Bond feeling": sweeping bridges, rough seas, and sea eagles soaring over the islands. A worthy highlight of the first part of the trip.

Winter is approaching – Børgefjell National Park

Further north, the temperatures finally drop below zero. At the latitude of Børgefjell National Park, the first large snowflakes begin to fall. Elisa and Ron spend several days at a trailhead parking lot, exploring the pristine region.

They hike across snow-covered wooden planks, photograph the vast landscape, and feel how good the exercise is for them. Fino is full of energy, which leads to significantly longer hikes than in previous years.

The most colourful night ever

Around 3:30 a.m., the Aurora app sounds an alarm: KP value over 6. Elisa and Ron put on their snow gear and step out into one of the most spectacular nights of their lives. The sky explodes in red, pink, green, and purple - for hours. And all this despite the fact that they aren't even north of the Arctic Circle. An unforgettable experience.

Onward towards Bodø – snow, snow chains, wilderness

In the following days, they increasingly encounter roads covered in deep snow. Snow chains have to be put on and taken off several times – it's a good thing they practiced this before the trip.

In the evenings they cook over a fire, camp freely in nature thanks to Park4Night and always make sure to leave places cleaner than they found them.

Outside, snow and silence; inside, warmth and security – that's what makes traveling by motorhome so special.

Sauna in Bodø & renewed Northern Lights

After days in the wilderness, Bodø feels almost bustling. They visit an atmospheric sauna at the harbor: two small saunas, an open changing area, and a bonfire in the snow. The sea is icy, but the Norwegians jump in with a composure that amazes Elisa and Ron.

Just 15 minutes outside the city, they later observed the Northern Lights again – this time faint, then suddenly intense, directly overhead. Another magical moment.

The land route to the Lofoten Islands

Since Fino wasn't allowed on deck of the ferries, the two opted for the overland route. It was longer, but incredibly beautiful: snow-covered plains, secluded lakes, and tranquil national parks. The journey itself became an adventure – and remained comfortable and safe thanks to the winter-ready Hymer models.

Arriving in Lofoten – a winter wonderland

Sortland is the first stop. Deeply snow-covered birch forests, ice crystals on the paths, and sporty locals characterise the scene. Even after five years, Elisa and Ron are still discovering new hiking trails that inspire them.

Devils Peak: Views over Svolvær and the surrounding islands.
Fløya: A classic with fantastic panoramas.
Offersøykammen: Only 436 meters high, but with a magnificent panoramic view of the sea and mountains.

Fino enjoys jumping through the snow – and the two love returning to their warm Hymer vehicles after long tours.

Henningsvær, Nusfjord & Reine

Henningsvær: A visit to the Trevarefabrikken (fishing factory), a stroll through the harbor, and a creative atmosphere.
Nusfjord: One of the oldest fishing villages, red rorbuer (traditional fishermen's cabins), and an impressive winter landscape.
Reine: Crystal-clear light, steep mountains, tranquil fjords – for Elisa and Ron, one of the most beautiful places in the world.

At Anita’s Seafood, they traditionally eat fish burgers – now a staple of their Lofoten routine.

Return journey – storm & last Northern Lights dance

The journey home was quite an ordeal: A storm with winds up to 130 km/h forced them to stop for two days at a gas station. It was precisely here that the value of a Hymer motorhome became apparent: stable, warm, and reliable.

When the wind subsided, they continued their journey. South of Trondheim, they witnessed one last, delicate display of the Northern Lights – a quiet, beautiful farewell.

Back in Germany, saying goodbye was difficult: to Norway, to winter – and to the Hymer vehicles that had accompanied them safely, warmly, and reliably through all the challenges.
