A winter adventure through the Alps in a Hymer

Travelling in winter requires flexibility, experience, and a reliable vehicle. That is precisely what Silvan, Johannes, and Patrick set out to do. During the cold season, they spent a total of one month on the road in a Hymer Grand Canyon S and a Hymer ML-T Xperience. Their route took them through Austria, Switzerland, and Italy—always keeping a close eye on the weather, snow cover, and avalanche conditions. Their goal was to make the most of the best conditions and experience winter in all its facets.

Obergurgl – Kick-off in high-alpine terrain

The journey began in Obergurgl in the Ötztal Alps. This high-altitude destination is known for its reliable snow conditions and offers the ideal setting to kick off a winter trip. Here, Silvan and the rest of the crew settled into the rhythm of the weeks ahead. Aaron, Torben, and Sebastian accompanied the group for part of the winter tour—experiencing early starts, changing weather, and life in a campervan.

Lenzerheide – Sunny days of skiing and perfect conditions

The journey continued to Lenzerheide in Switzerland. The group found an ideal spot at a campsite to stay for several days of skiing. In brilliant sunshine, they made the most of the excellently groomed slopes and the diverse fun park.

After days of skiing, the Hymer Grand Canyon S and the Hymer ML-T Xperience offered a comfortable retreat—with plenty of space to dry wet ski gear and boots and to cook together.

Pila in the Aosta Valley – Big mountains and plenty of fresh snow

Pila, in Italy’s Aosta Valley, offered a truly special highlight. The group spent the night camping freely in a parking area boasting impressive views of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. Over 50 centimeters of fresh snow fell there in a single night. When temperatures subsequently rose rapidly and the avalanche risk increased, the group made a conscious decision to move on. Having the campervan and motorhome made this kind of flexibility possible at all times.

Laax & See – Fun park, forest, and deep snow

A quick detour to Laax took the crew to one of the Alps' most famous freestyle spots. Despite dense fog, they didn't miss the chance to visit the fun park. Next, they headed to See. The wooded slopes meant a more stable avalanche situation, while heavy snowfall created exceptional powder days—some of the best of the entire season. They spent the night right by the mountain lift parking lot, just steps away from the next day's skiing.

Kaunertal – Slowing down instead of skiing

After about a week, there was a side trip to the Kaunertal. The ski resort remained closed due to a high avalanche risk.

The travel group took the opportunity for a wellness day and a conscious break. Such moments are also part of a long winter trip.

Cortina, Pustertal & Hochfügen – Winter at its most beautiful

After continuously monitoring the weather and avalanche conditions, the route took the group via Cortina to the Puster Valley. There, a perfect day of skiing awaited them in glorious weather—clear visibility, sunshine, and prime conditions. In the Zillertal—specifically in Hochfügen—Silvan and the rest of the group once again found excellent powder. Staying right next to the mountain lift allowed for an early start and enabled them to make the most of the conditions.

Kühtai & Ehrwald – Events and Final at the Zugspitze

A Freeride World Tour event in Kühtai prompted another stopover and offered exciting experiences beyond the skiing itself. The trip concluded with a final day of skiing in Ehrwald at the Zugspitze—an atmospheric finale set against an impressive backdrop.

Traveling in Winter – Weather & Vehicles

Throughout the month, the travel group experienced every facet of winter: snowstorms, very cold temperatures, rain, and perfect sunny days. Both the Hymer Grand Canyon S and the Hymer ML‑T Xperience proved to be ideal companions.

The campers offered enough space to dry gear, featured their own shower, and allowed for relaxed cooking for up to five people. This ensured a significant boost in comfort and everyday practicality, especially in bad weather.

Conclusion – Freedom that endures

For the travel group, the month flew by far too quickly. Staying right next to the ski areas—waking up in the morning and being on the mountain immediately—made every day special. The combination of impressive destinations, spontaneous route choices, and the high level of comfort offered by the two Hymer vehicles created a winter experience that left everyone wanting more.
