Southern France with the Hymer Venture S: From Provence to the Côte d’Azur

A week in the South of France in autumn, showcasing why Provence and the Côte d’Azur are among Europe’s most iconic regions: winding roads up Mont Ventoux, turquoise gorges at Lac de Sainte-Croix, vineyards bathed in golden evening light – and historic coastal towns like Nice, Menton, Èze, and Monaco. The Hymer Venture S proves itself a compact companion with alpine qualities and true self-sufficiency.

Departure from Stuttgart to southern Occitania

Early in the morning, John and Vanessa set off from Stuttgart, heading for southern Occitania. In their Hymer Venture S, they enjoyed the elevated seating position and the expansive views through the large windows – allowing them to experience the changing landscape with particular intensity. With every kilometer, the scenery transformed, the air became milder, and the colours more Mediterranean. On the long, sweeping stretches, the Venture S drove smoothly and precisely, and on winding roads, it was pleasantly agile – ideal for the diverse topography on their journey south. Their anticipation of mountains, gorges, and coastal towns grew – the perfect start to a week filled with driving pleasure, discoveries, and wonderful memories.

Mont Ventoux, lavender and the turquoise-hued Lac de Sainte-Croix

Their day trip took them, with several short stops along the way, to the legendary Mont Ventoux. At around 1900 meters, it rises prominently over the region – an icon of the Tour de France. Their Hymer Venture S climbed effortlessly, like a mountain goat; at the top, they were rewarded with a sweeping view across the landscape.

Heading east through the interior, they passed numerous lavender fields. Even though the flowering season is in June, the fragrance lingered intensely in the air even after the harvest – impressive and a clear reason to return in the summer. The journey continued to Lac de Sainte-Croix: Crossing the Pont de Galetas, the view opened up to wonderfully turquoise water flowing from a gorge into the lake. Pedal boats drifted leisurely into the water, the rock faces rose impressively, and all around, exciting mountain and pass roads invited them to explore their winding routes.

The Verdon Gorge and an evening at the Château de Berne

John and Vanessa dedicated the day to exploring the Verdon Gorge – a natural wonder with sweeping views, impressive rock faces, and varied roads. In the afternoon, they immersed themselves in a Provençal atmosphere: at the Château de Berne, they gained insights into the region and its wine culture, sampled wines, and took a break among the vineyards. The sunset bathed everything in warm light – a peaceful end to an impressive day.

City mode on the Côte d'Azur: First destination Nice

Originally, Saint-Tropez was on the itinerary. However, the parking situation proved virtually impossible. Therefore, John and Vanessa decided to go to Nice instead. The old town, with its colourful facades, markets, and friendly people, invites you to simply stroll and stop again and again. From the Château hill, a sweeping view opens up over the city and the sea – a panorama that perfectly captures Nice's unique blend of urban life and coastal setting.

Èze: High altitude, winding streets and Jardin Exotique

In the morning, they drove to Èze, a small, historic hilltop village perched directly above the coast. The steep, winding paths and the Jardin Exotique make it a worthwhile destination: cacti, succulents, and the sea views create a harmonious blend of nature and aesthetics. Èze lies between Nice and Monaco and is divided into the hilltop Èze-Village and the coastal village of Èze-sur-Mer; from the village, panoramic views extend as far as Cap-Ferrat. The steep Sentier Nietzsche trail connects the coastal train station with the hilltop village and offers a scenic hike. In addition to craft shops and workshops, the Fragonard perfumery provides insights into the art of perfume making.

Monaco: Harbor splendor, palace and urban density

Onward to Monaco. The city impresses with its marina, luxury yachts, and concentration of glamour and urban architecture. Monaco is a sovereign city-state of just under two square kilometers, divided into Monte Carlo, La Condamine (with Port Hercules), Fontvieille, and the historic Monaco-Ville perched on the Rock. Among the classic attractions are the Casino de Monte-Carlo and the Opéra Salle Garnier, the Prince's Palace with its daily changing of the guard at noon (11:55 a.m.), the Oceanographic Museum on the cliff, and the Jardin Exotique. The famous Formula 1 street circuit runs directly along the harbor, making the compact topography particularly striking.

The best views are from "Le Rocher" (Monaco-Ville) and the promenades around Port Hercules. Fontvieille was created through land reclamation – the Mareterra project is currently extending the coastline further.

Menton: Lemon scent and Belle Époque on the Italian border

Menton, the "lemon city" of the Riviera. Pastel-colored facades, Belle Époque villas, and the Basilica of Saint-Michel dominate the panorama overlooking the sea. Strolling along the Promenade du Soleil, they experienced a blend of Mediterranean flair and a touch of Italian ease. In the Jardins Biovès and among small shops selling lemon products, they discovered the local character – tranquil, friendly, and tasteful.

Return journey via Switzerland to Stuttgart

Finally, the comfortable journey home via Switzerland awaited. The route offered time to reflect on the week: from the barren heights of Mont Ventoux to the turquoise waters of Lac de Sainte-Croix, the depths of the Gorges du Verdon, and the lively coastal towns of the Côte d’Azur. A trip full of variety, wonderful encounters, and a clear desire to return for the lavender bloom – which in Provence, depending on the location, usually reaches its peak from mid-June to mid-July.

Fazit

For John and Vanessa, this week combines the alpine side of Provence with the urban, Mediterranean Côte d’Azur – and demonstrates how the Hymer Venture S enhances the diversity of this route: agile in the mountains, comfortable with panoramic views, connected, and self-sufficient for spontaneous stops. Those wishing to follow this tour should plan around the lavender season and remain flexible at hotspots like Saint-Tropez. The Hymer Venture S transforms the blend of winding roads, coastline, and culture into a perfectly harmonious travel experience.
