A winter road trip beyond the Arctic Circle

In late winter, David and Alicia set off for Northern Europe in their Hymer Yellowstone 601. Their route took them through Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway—covering thousands of kilometers, navigating extreme weather conditions, and traversing some of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes. The focus was on independence: they spent only a few nights at campsites, remaining self-sufficient and flexible for the majority of the journey while staying close to nature. At the same time, the trip became part of their everyday lives, as working on the road was just as much a part of the experience as exploring their destinations.

Denmark – Sand, Wind, and Sea

The first leg of the journey took us through Denmark. A particular highlight was visiting the drive-on beach on Rømø. Driving the Hymer Yellowstone right up to the water’s edge, feeling the wind, and letting our gaze wander across the endless beach made for an impressive start to the trip.

Here, the North was already showing its rugged side: strong winds, changeable weather, and a sense of vastness that instantly slowed the pace—a taste of what was yet to come.

Heading north through Sweden

The journey continued through Sweden, with long days of driving and increasingly wintry conditions. The landscape grew quieter, settlements became scarcer, and the roads lonelier. Dense forests, frozen lakes, and dwindling traffic defined this stretch. Here, the Hymer Yellowstone served primarily as a vehicle for covering long distances—a mobile base camp that allowed for flexible breaks and the freedom to set one's own pace.

Finnish Lapland – Experience an active winter

David and Alicia reached Lapland, in the far north of Finland. Here, winter revealed itself in all its intensity: temperatures dropping to minus ten degrees, snowstorms, and an impressive silence. They stayed in one location for several days, using the time for typical winter activities.

Skiing and an extensive snowshoe hike took them deep into the snow-covered landscape. The experience was rounded out by a husky tour and a visit to a reindeer farm, offering an authentic glimpse into life north of the Arctic Circle.

Amidst all the adventure, everyday life continued as well: Alicia used her time in Lapland to work remotely—an impressive example of how travel and a career can be combined while on the road.

Abisko National Park – Silence and Vastness

From Finland, the journey continued in the Hymer Yellowstone 601 to Abisko National Park in Sweden. The vast winter landscape truly demonstrated just how ideally suited the campervan is for such trips: compact and agile on the road, yet comfortable and reliable in snow, cold, and changing conditions.

The open landscape, crisp air, and snow-covered plains created an almost meditative atmosphere. Frozen lakes and sweeping horizons defined the scenery. The days were defined by tranquility, brief excursions, and a mindful appreciation of the surroundings, while the Hymer Yellowstone provided David and Alicia with a flexible, cosy home on wheels at all times.

The Lofoten Islands – A Week Between Storm and Sea

A major highlight of the trip was the stay in Norway’s Lofoten Islands. Instead of just a brief visit, David and Alicia spent a full week there.

The landscape was spectacular: rugged mountains, small fishing villages, and the open sea—accompanied by wind speeds of up to 120 km/h. The conditions were challenging, but that was precisely what made the experience so appealing.

Amidst explorations, walks, and simply taking the time to linger in special spots, there was also room to get some work done. The combination of experiencing nature and working remotely proved surprisingly effective, making the stay a particularly intense experience.

National parks, fjords, and iconic routes

After the Lofoten Islands, the route continued through Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park and then headed south. Passing through Trondheim, the journey followed well-known routes such as the Atlantic Ocean Road. Highlights of this leg included the Geirangerfjord and the Aurlandsfjord. Steep rock faces, deeply carved fjords, and ever-changing light conditions made every stage unique—even though the days behind the wheel were long once again.

Return journey from Southern Norway

The route along Norway’s southern fjords eventually led to the ferry back to Denmark. The landscape grew gentler, and the temperatures milder. After weeks filled with intense impressions, the journey was slowly drawing to a close—leaving the feeling of having experienced Northern Europe in its pristine winter state.

Conclusion: Freedom that lasts

This journey was defined by extremes—snowstorms, strong winds, and long distances—yet also by tranquility, vast open spaces, and profound encounters with nature. David and Alicia combined adventure, daily life, and remote work in a way that demonstrated just how flexible travel can be today.
