Kandersteg & Oeschinensee – A Kick-off in the Snow

The first stop on the winter tour was to Kandersteg in the Swiss Alps. Deeply snow-covered streets, meter-high snow walls and icy temperatures created a real winter camping feeling right from the start. The Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience mastered the winter conditions with ease and brought the travelers safely to Camping Rendezvous. From there the path continued to Lake Oeschinen, past snow-covered forests and impressive mountain scenery.

Particularly practical in winter: the heating could be activated on the way back using the Hymer Connect app. When we returned, we found a pleasantly warm interior instead of icy temperatures. The night in the pop-up roof also demonstrated the vehicle's strengths in winter conditions. While snow was quietly falling outside, the camper offered a cosy and comfortable retreat in the middle of the snowy Alpine landscape.

Bielsa – Pyrenees, silence, and a sky full of stars

The subsequent stages led south into the Spanish Pyrenees around Bielsa, in the Pineta Valley. Long drives, mountain passes, and wintry road conditions quickly became the relaxing part of the journey.

The Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience impressed—particularly on long stretches—with its high level of driving comfort and pleasant sense of spaciousness.

The campsite in the Valle de Pineta was situated right in the middle of the forest—lacking amenities, yet surrounded by mountains, total darkness, and a starry sky. It was here that the camper proved to be a warm, sheltered retreat amidst the wintry landscape. The next morning, the first rays of sunlight bathed the mountain scenery around the Embalse de Pineta in a warm glow. With a view of the lake, the day began in absolute tranquillity, far removed from everyday life.

Between seasons and forgotten places – traveling in the Pyrenees

The journey onward through the Pyrenees took us through a wide variety of landscapes and weather conditions—from autumnal forests and stretches of rain and fog to snow-capped mountain peaks.

On the way to the coast, we made spontaneous stops at the Ruinas de Escó and the Antiguo Balneario de Tiermas. Abandoned walls, wisps of fog, and warm sulfur springs created a unique atmosphere.

It is precisely these kinds of spontaneous detours that showcase the freedom of traveling in a camper. Thanks to the flexible itinerary, it was possible to stop, warm up, and alter the route at any time. The Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience consistently served as a comfortable base camp between the various legs of the journey. That little touch of home is what makes spontaneous detours possible in the first place.

Playa de Sakoneta – Rock, sea, and millions of years of geological history

The route continued to the Atlantic coast of the Basque Country, near Playa de Sakoneta and the famous flysch rock formations. The drive itself—navigating narrow, winding roads—offered stunning views of the rugged coastal landscape.

We took a relaxing break right at the viewpoint, enjoying the sea view before continuing on foot along the coast. Doors open, sun on our faces, coffee brewing on the gas stove—out on the road, these simple moments often beat any café. The campervan becomes your own private terrace with a view of the sea.

The Flysch rocks, with their striking geological layers, rank among the region's most impressive natural landscapes—each layer a chapter of Earth's history dating back millions of years.

At sunset, warm light bathed the cliffs and the Atlantic coast in golden hues—perfect conditions for a peaceful evening right by the sea.

Playa de la Arnía – Sunset carved in stone

After a quiet night surrounded by nature, the journey continued to Playa de la Arnía. Rugged rock towers, sharp-edged stone slabs, and the powerful waves of the Atlantic define the coastal landscape.

The scenery was particularly striking at sunset. From a narrow rocky promontory, there was a sweeping view across the sea as the sky and coastline were bathed in warm hues.

The Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience was waiting just a few steps away, making spontaneous stops at extraordinary locations particularly easy.

Praia de Carricelas – The Atlantic, vastness, and losing track of time.

At the westernmost point of the journey, Praia de Carricelas awaited with sweeping views of the Atlantic and a tranquil coastal atmosphere.

The pitch right by the sea quickly turned the camper into a private retreat with a view. With the sliding door open, the sound of the waves, and relaxed hours spent right on the coast, it was the quintessential "vanlife" experience.

On the way to the beach in the late afternoon, the massive rock arches along the coast, sculpted by the Atlantic, were particularly impressive.

At sunset, the warm light was reflected in the wet stretches of sand, transforming the landscape into an almost surreal setting.

Between Zumaia and Getaria – the sound of the waves

After two weeks, the route slowly led back towards the north. Between Zumaia and Getaria, a small viewpoint right on the coast offered the perfect spot for another night by the sea.

With the pop-up roof raised and a view of the Atlantic, the constant sound of the waves became a companion throughout the night.

The next morning, the coast revealed its most tranquil side: a sunrise over the ocean, crisp air, and the first surfers riding the waves made for a truly memorable start to the day.

Aguas Tuertas & La Vall de Boí – Winter Back to Square One

To conclude, the route led back into the mountains. Passing along narrow roads and winding bends, the path took us through the Valle de Hecho and past snow-capped peaks towards Aguas Tuertas.

The hike to the snow-covered high plateau led through snow and ice, offering impressive views of the wintry Pyrenean landscape.

The parking spot in La Vall de Boí was tucked away among the mountains. Around 20 centimeters of fresh snow fell overnight, transforming the surroundings into a pristine winter landscape. Despite the challenging conditions, the Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience handled the snowy descent with confidence and safety.

Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval – a final stop in the mountains

The final leg of the journey led from the Spanish Pyrenees back towards the Alps. The approximately 11-hour stretch through France was marked by rain, strong wind gusts, and challenging road conditions.

It was precisely in these demanding weather conditions that the Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience demonstrated its strengths in terms of driving comfort and safety.

Upon reaching the destination, the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval awaited with yet another impressive natural setting, featuring numerous waterfalls and steep rock faces.

The End of the Journey – Back to Bad Waldsee

After two weeks filled with winter landscapes, coastal roads, mountain passes, and spontaneous stops, the journey concluded back in Bad Waldsee.

To round things off, the Waldsee-Therme provided a relaxing transition back to everyday life.

The Hymer Grand Canyon S Xperience served as a reliable companion throughout the entire tour—navigating snow, rain, winding mountain roads, and endless coastal stretches—and became more than just a vehicle: a flexible retreat offering maximum freedom on the road.
