HYMER ML-T - Driver assistance systems

Safety not only of extreme importance at HYMER; it is also a top priority at Mercedes-Benz right from development and design, placing the transporters with the iconic star emblem among the safest of their class. Thanks to its safety packages that are unique in the van segment, the Sprinter no longer has to hide behind any passenger car. In many cases, the numerous standard or optional safety features assist in reducing the accident risk as well as increasing driving comfort.

World innovation: The crosswind assistant on the HYMER ML-T as standard.

The Mercedes Sprinter is the first van to be equipped with a crosswind assistant as standard*. From January 2015, the HYMER ML-T is the first motorhome to be equipped with this crosswind assistant as standard.

With its sensors, the crosswind assistant promptly detects forces impacting on the vehicle as a result of side wind gusts, whether on a bridge or when overtaking a HGV, and assists the driver in remaining in their lane. When travelling at speeds of 80 km/h and above, the assistant corrects the course of the vehicle by automatic braking interventions on the wheels located on the side of the vehicle facing the wind. Consequently, the crosswind assistant is able to prevent inappropriate reactions and increase the driver’s feeling of safety.

By the way, the crosswind assistant can be obtained as a retrofit solution very easily via a software update for all HYMER ML-T vehicles delivered prior to January 2015. Simply contact your HYMER dealer for information regarding concrete possibilities and modalities of the professional retrofitting.

Advantage: The driver experiences a noticeable relief. Their feeling of safety and comfort is increased and inappropriate driver reactions are prevented during gusts. Furthermore, the driver is also made aware of the system intervention via a warning light on the instrument cluster. The crosswind assistant is activated at speeds of 80 km/h and above.

*Please note: The crosswind assistant is not installed in combination with a four-wheel drive system.

ADAPTIVE ESP®: Stability in milliseconds.

The ADAPTIVE ESP® is the latest handling control system which takes the loading condition of the vehicle into account. It actively engages in certain dangerous driving situations by means of specific braking interventions to individual wheels and adjusts the engine output as needed in order to help the driver master the critical dangerous situations. It combines the functions of the anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control system (TCS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), brake assist system (BAS) and the hill start assist (HSA) whilst also equipping the vehicle with an extra driving stability assistant.

Attention: The ADAPTIVE ESP® cannot override the laws of driving physics. For instance, the ADAPTIVE ESP® cannot prevent skidding as a result of aquaplaning. Not even the ADAPTIVE ESP® is able to prevent an accident if a driver exceeds the physical limits.

Optional systems available in the driver assistance package:


As part of the driver assistance package, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST issues a visual and acoustic warning when the vehicle is too close to another vehicle or obstacle and assists you in the event of an emergency brake manoeuvre.

It combines a radar-supported distance warning system with the braking support from the brake assist system (BAS) and, in doing so, helps in reducing the risk of a rear-impact collision. The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST distance warning system is based upon a mid-range radar sensor which is embedded in the front section of the vehicle and, in the speed range of between 30 and 160 km/h, permanently measures the distance to the vehicle in front and also checks its relative speed. Stationary obstacles can be recorded at speeds of up to 70 km/h.

A warning light appears on the instrument cluster if the driver drops below the minimum safety distance to a vehicle in front for several seconds. An intermittent tone will sound if the distance rapidly decreases further as a result of high speed or severe acceleration. At the same time, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST activates the BAS pro brake assist system. This system calculates the braking pressure that would be required to prevent a rear-impact collision.

If the driver now forcefully applies the brake, the BAS pro brake assist system automatically increases the braking pressure to a value tailored to the situation where necessary. In the event of an emergency braking procedure, the ABS prevents the wheels from locking. The braking force support generated by the BAS pro brake assist system is deactivated once again when the brake pedal is released or if there is no longer any risk of collision.

The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST is only available as part of the driver assistance package. It is not available as a stand-alone item.

Lane departure warning system.

The lane departure warning system warns the driver by means of acoustic and visual signals if they unintentionally leave their lane. Intended lane changes are recognised as such by the system and no warning is issued.

It is equipped with a camera which is positioned on the inside of the windscreen. This camera is able to register clear lane markings by evaluating the differences in contrast between the road surfaces and the boundary lines. An electronic control unit processes the camera data and the activities of the driver in order to determine whether the lane has been left intentionally or unintentionally. The system provides an acoustic and visual warning if it determines that the lane has been left unintentionally. As a result, the risk of accidents caused by briefly falling asleep at the wheel or a decrease in concentration can be reduced.

The lane departure warning system is only available as part of the driver assistance package. It is not available as a stand-alone item.

Full beam assistant.

The full beam assistant automatically controls the full beam depending on the environmental and traffic situation for the best possible view.

It is controlled via a monitor camera located behind the windscreen which permanently records the front vehicle environment and the traffic events taking place in front of the vehicle. If the light conditions change, the full beam is automatically activated or deactivated depending on the environment and traffic situation. This always ensures that best possible lighting of the road which is noticeably beneficial in terms of comfort, especially during long trips.

The full beam assistant is only available as part of the driver assistance package. It is not available as a stand-alone item.

Headlight assistant with light and rain sensor.

The headlight assistant is particularly useful at dusk as the light is activated at the correct time. Furthermore, the rain sensor automatically activates the windscreen wipers when it begins to rain and adjusts the wiping frequency to the severity of the precipitation in an infinitely variable manner.

The headlight assistant is only available as part of the driver assistance package. It is not available as a stand-alone item.
